This is a tough subject for lots to think about but it is also very meaningful to incorporate and remember those who have passed on before us on such a special day that you wish they could be present for. There are ample ways that you can be creative and make this part of your ceremony or reception special and tailored to the memory of specific ones that you have lost along the way.

A Special Floral Arrangement in their Memory

This could be on a table at the ceremony and/or reception location. You could put a simple note with it, let it speak for itself or put a notation in the program of what this floral arrangement signifies.

A Mention in the Program

At the end or on the back of the program you could list the names of those you want to remember and preface it by something like this, “in memory of those we wish could share in our special day”, “in loving memory of those who are forever in our hearts” or maybe, “in honor of those watching from heaven”. You could also incorporate a poem or lyrics under the names of those you mention if it is something special that speaks to you.

Pictures

Pictures of your loved ones could be framed on a table, you could make a picture collage, they could be put on a board with push pins or clipped on a line with laundry pins. You could also get wallet size (or smaller) photos of those you want to remember and incorporate them into your bouquet by hole-punching the corner and tying them to ribbons on your bouquet. You could also put the photos in a locket and wear the locket or let it hang from your bouquet. There are quite a variety of ways that you can incorporate these precious memories of loved ones with photographs.

A Memorial Chair

A memorial chair can be a chair that no guest sits in at the ceremony location. It typically will be in the first row of the ceremony and you can place flowers or a picture on the chair to signify the importance of this person in your life and your desire for them to be a part of this big day.

A Moment of Silence

The minister could offer a moment of silence during the ceremony to remember those (spoken or not) that are no longer with you.

Lighting of a Candle

You could light a candle in their honor during the ceremony.

Something Old, Something Borrowed or Something Blue

You could let this person be a part of your something old, something borrowed or something blue by incorporating something that belonged to them into your wedding day. Maybe you have an old bible the minister could read out of, a handkerchief or a piece of jewelry that has been passed down. Think about some family heirlooms that have been passed down in your family that perhaps you could incorporate throughout the day.

We know that you must be sensitive when dealing with this type of situation in regards to your wedding day and sometimes it can be overwhelming to think about or plan for. We hope that the suggestions we offered are helpful and that you can find the perfect way to honor your loved ones who are no longer with you.

Happy Planning.
