We are all about getting creative with cakes or adding additional sweets to your big day but if you are traditional, here are some pointers for wedding cake selection! We have also thrown in some additional tips for dealing with the cake on the day of your wedding!

Size

See this chart (thanks to USA Bride & Daily Wedding Planning Tip) to figure out how many tiers you need based on what your guest count is!

Flavor

The options can be endless but choose something that shows your style as a couple! You can also base the flavor off of a general wedding theme or the season. You don’t have to do a simple vanilla cake with buttercream icing (unless that’s your favorite and in that case it’s always delicious) but how about Red Velvet, Carrot cake, Lavender, Pitaschio or Pumpkin? You can even have multiple flavors with each layer being different! It’s your day…go crazy!

Filling

Do you want fresh fruit preserves, Nutella, lemon curd or chocolate ganache in your cake? Or just keep it simple without filling…

Shape

Do you want a square or round cake? How about getting creative a doing a scalloped cake or a heart shaped cake? It’s all up to you!

Icing or fondant?

This will depend on the style of cake that you are going for but you will need to decide whether you want this cake to have a traditional icing or fondant. The look varies drastically based on what you choose so know what you want and what you like! Most of the time icing tastes better but can be difficult to achieve certain designs with!

Style/Décor

Do you want a cake topper? Do you want to have fresh flower accents or accents in fondant? How about shimmer, gems or piping? The options are endless…go Pinterest away to get some ideas flowing! See our “Cakespiration” board here!

Some Helpful Hints:

*Don’t forget to make sure you have someone to cut the wedding cake! Wedding cake cutting is an art form. Typically someone from the catering company can do it but sometimes they charge an extra fee so make sure to discuss this ahead of time and put it on your wedding timeline!

*Don’t forget to provide servingware for the cake cutting! This is something special that if you purchase and engrave you can keep and use forever (it’s also nice to have when taking ceremonial pictures of your cake cutting) and don’t forget someone has to actually cut the cake!

*Don’t forget to save the top tier for your first wedding anniversary but also don’t forget to eat your top tier on your first wedding anniversary! This means you need to have a box on hand to wrap this puppy up in so it can go in your freezer for next year!

*Don’t forget to ask the venue if they have a refrigerator or plan ahead for an appropriate delivery time if they do not, especially if your reception is outdoors!

*Don’t forget, you need to rent or purchase cake plates, cake forks and napkins! This is also a nice place to incorporate some personalized napkins with your initials and wedding date!

Happy cake tasting and happy planning!
