You have picked out the perfect paper, color, font and calligrapher…now it’s time to send out your wedding invitations! At this point you should be 6-8 weeks from your wedding day so you may be starting to get anxious about how many people are actually going to RSVP. Knowing the proper etiquette for wedding invitations can be tricky so we are here to help on some of the more common questions our brides have…

To Invite OR Not To Invite Children?

It is okay to invite or not invite children to your wedding. It is becoming more and more common to only address the invitation to the parents not “and family” and put a small note at the bottom of the invitation that says something like this, “Although we love children, our ceremony and reception will be an adults only affair”. Whether you want kids at your wedding or not, make sure to politely convey this message to your guests.

Plus Ones…Or Not?

It has always been assumed that because you get invited to a wedding you should also get a plus one. This used to be customary but it is okay if the guest is not married or in a serious relationship to just address the invitation to them. If you have the space though, it’s always a nice gesture to your guest to let them bring someone along, especially if they are not going to know anyone, except the bride and groom, at the wedding.

RSVP Date

Make sure to put a “RSVP by” date on the invitation a little earlier than you actually need it by (3 weeks before your wedding date is what we suggest)! It is inevitable that a lot of your guests, whether they love and care for you or not, will fail to RSVP. Give yourself a week buffer to call/text/email some of these friends and relatives to get their confirmation on whether they are coming or not in time to get your final numbers to your caterer.

What is appropriate to put on the invitation?

Keep your invitation simple and to the point….who, what, when and where BUT slip a little more information in the invitation envelope on a separate card to let your guests know if you have a room block at a local hotel or have a wedding website where they can find out more information about the wedding weekend. This is where you can also have your registry information…just don’t put it on your invite!

Wording

Our friends at Wedding Paper Divas have provided us with a user-friendly template for playing around with the verbiage of your wedding invitation. This will be super helpful to guide you on wording based on whether your wedding is informal or formal and what parents are to be included on the invitation.

Do I need to provide a stamp for the RSVP card?

YES! You need to provide an RSVP card and RSVP envelope with the wedding invitation. That envelope should already be addressed back to you with a stamp on it. Not only does this make it easy on your guests but it’s less of an excuse for them not to respond and not to mention it’s proper wedding etiquette!
